This is probably the one question that is asked the most often and actually one of the most (if not the most) important question from someone who is just coming into the world of CBD Oil.
In this article I am going to try to walk you through all the key information that you should know about what CBD is.
To begin, before we find out what CBD is, it is critical to first know where it comes from in order to sort through some of the misinformation that you may have heard.
At its core, CBD is a botanical natural compound found in two types of plants. It is completely natural and has been used for thousands of years and across every civilization known to man.
CBD is to these plants what Vitamin E, for an example, is to the Aloe Vera Plant. CBD, like vitamin E, is part of their respective plant.
Furthermore just like there are other vitamins and minerals found in the Aloe Vera plant, the plants that contain CBD also contain other compounds (more on compounds later) and that is where knowing where CBD comes from makes a huge difference.
Ok, here we go, the two plants that CBD is found in are called Hemp and Marijuana. The Hemp plant and the Marijuana plant are two distinct plant species that both come from the Cannabis Sativa plant family. So while both plants essentially come from the same origins or seeds, how they are cultivated changes the botanical dna and make up of the plants.
So the Hemp plant has CBD in it and the Marijuana plant also has CBD in it. So while both Hemp and Marijuana have CBD in it, Hemp plants (depending on the Hemp farm) are cultivated to be rich in CBD versus a Marijuana farm that will cultivate Marijuana plants to contain the THC compound as well. THC is the compound found in Marijuana (and some Hemp) plants that make you "high". [Side note: When buying CBD Oil you want to make sure the product is from a reputable farm and has lab results that show the Max Active THC count is 0.00% even from Hemp plants unless you want THC see example]
Ok, so know that you understand where CBD comes from and a little bit about what it is, lets dive a little further into exactly what CBD is.
What is CBD?
CBD is actually the abbreviation for Cannabidiol. It is a compound, a mineral if you will, found within the Hemp and Marijuana plants.
Pictured to the left is the DNA structure of a single CBD,
CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of 113 cannabiniods identified within the cannibis sativa plant family. In terms we are most use to, cannabiniods are to the cannibis sativa plants what vitamins are to the Aloe Vera plant. As such, in the same manner Vitamin E is found in the Aloe Vera plant, CBD is found in the Hemp plant.
While there are also other cannabiniods found in cannibis sativa plants such as CBC, CBG,
THC and many others, CBD is one of the most potent.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD Oil is the result of the CBD compound being extracted from either the Hemp or Marijuana plant. The difference in the oils is the compounds included and the concentration of those compounds.
Your Take Away
From this article a couple of key takeaways I feel you should take with you:
Hemp and Marijuana both have the CBD compound
